Never one to settle for second-best, Pablo Picasso's linocut after a well-known painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder outshines its model. Encountering the linocut late in life, Picasso soon revolutionized the medium. Before developing his technique of printing from a single block, he created this astonishing image. Created from six or seven separate blocks of linoleum, this work demonstrates Picasso's ability to envision his subject down to the finest detail. Vibrant pattern and texture animate the woman's entire being; her features emerge from overlaid forms in yellow, rose and black that contrast with the white paper showing through. Her jewelry and hair are exuberantly ornate. She is a 16th century lady attired in Picasso's modern 20th century vernacular. This work is valued for its intricate layering of colors and referential subject matter.

Created by Deschamps in 1966, this work is a color lithograph after the original color linocut by Picasso of the same title from 1958, from the unnumbered edition of 2000, in good condition with margins trimmed to remove text, not affecting the image. Both 2010 New York exhibitions of prints by this 20th century master included versions of the linocut on which our work is based. Testifying to the work's enduring popularity - and importance - these exhibitions documented Picasso's prolific output in the graphic arts.
