Henri Matisse Jeune Fille Aux Boucles Brun, (Young Girl with Brown Earrings), 1924 depicts the exquisite portrait of a beautiful woman. She gazes ahead, but her dark, beautiful eyes do not quite meet the viewer's. Despite her beauty, the viewer detects a hint of sadness, as if she longs for something more. Her eyes are slightly lidded as she looks into the mid ground. Delicate curls escape her up-do and cascade down her neck. Matisse depicts this woman in black and white, utilizing strong tonal contrasts to create a sense of depth. The texture of the work adds complexity. Matisse shrouds part of the woman's face in shadow and places her against a backdrop of plants, adding further intrigue to this mysterious work. We wonder about the context of the plants, whether she is outside, or whether they are meant more symbolically to represent her youth and potential.
Created in 1924, this original lithograph is hand signed by Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) in pencil in the lower right margin and inscribed ‘Etat’ in pencil in the lower right margin, aside from the numbered edition of 100.
